The Venue

This building was erected for the Hastings Motor Company in 1927. In 1929, it reopened as Stanton Motors. Stanton was a dealer for the Ford Motor Company.

Christopher Charles Stanton Sr., owned Stanton Motors, a Ford dealership that began in 1924 when Hastings was a bustling agricultural center. It would remain a family business and a town institution until the Stantons sold it in 1980.

The newly restored building at 301 N. Main was designated as a “significant cultural resource” at the June 6 meeting of the St. Johns County Cultural Resource Review Board.

The designation was awarded due to the structure’s associations with the historical commercial development of Hastings at the turn of the century; its Commercial Masonry Vernacular architecture typical of early main streets; and painted murals of Florida imagery by A. E. Backus on the second floor.

The walls in that area still sport faded, but beautiful wall murals painted by Backus. “Beanie” as he was known, was an American artist famous for his vivid Florida landscapes and distinct painting style.

Hastings, FL

Henry Morrison Flagler built tourist hotels at St. Augustine in the late 19th century, including the Ponce de León Hotel. He needed a local source of fresh vegetables for his guests, so he persuaded Thomas Horace Hastings, his cousin, to develop a farm. A small community evolved into a town, which was named for its founder in 1890. Hastings is known as the "Potato Capital of Florida" with 21,000 acres of potato farms, but also produces cabbage, onions, eggplant and ornamental horticulture.
